I am a mediocre runner.
I will never have sponsors.
I may never qualify for Boston.
But I chase faster times and further distances. I take training seriously and work toward tough goals. Sometimes I train hard and push hard and race myself…but sometimes I just run for fun.
I am not standing on any podiums, but if I can motivate people to run their best and have fun doing it, that’s a win for me.
We can’t all be elites, but we can all be bush league runners.
I am Bill Dowis, the Bush League Runner.
I started running late in my 29th year after spending most of my life in a sedentary state.
It took a long time to build up my running to where it is now, but along the way I have ran a race at every distance from 5K to 50 miles.
Although I am slow and have struggled with it, the marathon is my favorite race distance.
I am the author of the memoir, Chasing the Dragon: How a Chronic Quitter Became Addicted to the Marathon, and I am currently working on my second running book, to be launched later this year.
